Urth Caffe Coming to Pasadena

June 4, 2009 · 9 Comments

A favorite for many organic tea and coffee drinkers and one of the most successful cafe concepts to come out of LA, the future arrival (TBD) of Urth Caffe in Pasadena is nothing short of pure excitement. With locations mostly on the Westside and the new flagship in Downtown LA’s Arts District, Pasadena is soon to join that coveted list. The location will be at the SE corner of Colorado Blvd. and Madison Ave.

Adding businesses like Urth Caffe to the Playhouse District will continue to help strengthen the district as a popular destination which is incredibly important to act as the “pedestrian bridge” from Old Pasadena/Paseo Colorado to South Lake Ave. Continuing to fill the area with high quality businesses will help Pasadena become more vibrant and pedestrian friendly.

Given the meritorious reputation Urth Caffe has as a high quality business, it is not just “another” cafe to many people (hence why all their locations do very, very well). In some way, it’s actually quite a feat to stand out in a sea of other businesses in a town like LA saturated by just about everything else.

Should we have kept Plaza Pasadena (the old mall) instead of replacing it with Paseo Colorado because, “Did we ‘need’ another mall?” “Did we need ‘another’ building built across the street?” (i.e., Western Asset, Montana Lofts)

If it helps Pasadena evolve in a positive direction, instead of staying static, then I would say yes.

Something was going to go there. That corner has been for sale for many, many months. I think Urth is a good business. My only concern about any business that builds there is that the architecture would be attractive, and we’ll have to wait and see.

I think Urth Caffe has done a nice job with the architecture on some of their other ground up locations, particularly Downtown L.A and I don’t foresee Pasadena being an exception to that standard.

This will be a welcome addition to an underutilized section of Colorado Blvd.

I’m very happy about this decision. And I think it will help energize the area.

Urth Caffe will be very successful here, and Pasadenans will be very thankful the company chose to open a unit here. They do good business in every site they operate, and the buzz, pun intended, about the place is nearly unanimously good.

Sadly, though, what will happen to Zinkes? They do some mighty fine shoe repair.
